St. Jude
(Patron of the Hopeless Cases)

Novena to Saint Jude

The saints are the friends of God. They are the friends of God because during their lifetime they did His Will. Everyone who wants to, may become a friend of God. There are thousands on the Church's Roll of Honor. They have come from every Catholic land, from every walk of life. Popes, bishops and priests, kings and queens, rich men and poor, statesmen, scholars, soldiers, lawyers, physicians, consecrated virgins, mothers of families, laborers, servants, and even slaves, have been given that title of honor and glory by the Church; not, as is plain, because of their position or wealth, or for any other earthly human consideration; not because they led ordinarily good lives, but because they rose high above average standards, and were heroic in loving devotion to God and to their fellow men.

Saint Jude Thaddeus (the courageous) was the brother of Saint James the Less, and a relative of our Lord. He preached chiefly in Palestine and was martyred probably in Phoenicia. He wrote the last of the canonical Epistles, the very forceful Epistle of Saint Jude, in which he warns against the seduction of false teaching. He is popular as the patron in desperate cases.

Novena Prayer

O Glorious Saint Jude, by those sublime prerogatives wherewith thou wast ennobled in thy lifetime namely, thy kinship with our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh and thy vocation to be an Apostle, by that glory which now is thine in heaven as the reward of thine apostolic labor and thy martyrdom obtain for me from the Giver of every good and perfect gift all the graces whereof I stand in need, especially (Here mention your intentions) in order to treasure up in my heart the divinely inspired doctrines which thou hast transmitted to us in thy Epistle, that is to say, to build our edifice of perfection upon our most holy faith, praying by the grace of the Holy Spirit to keep ourselves in the love of God, by all means, to help them that go astray, exulting thus the glory and majesty, the dominion and power of Him, Who is able to keep us without sin, and to present us spotless with exceeding joy at the coming of our divine Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
